Writers Guidelines For TechnologyInnovator.com Jul 1, 2001 – By Harold Abraham
Welcome to TechnologyInnovator.com!
Thanks for your interest in writing for our growing series of IT-related webzines.
For Journalists & Freelancers
>> If you are an IT journalist or freelancer, we do not offer any paid writing opportunities at the present time. But if you are between jobs and don't want to have a discontinuous gap on your c.v.; want to stay current in your field; and do not mind writing for free, we will be glad to post your stuff until you find a new job. During your time with us, you can add to your c.v. the title "Contributing Writer, TechnologyInnovator.com," and have plenty of clips and a bona fide reference to maintain your "c.v. continuity" during the inter-job twilight we've all experienced. As well, each posting may include a biographical summary and a link to your blog, portfolio and/or c.v.
For Aspiring Writers
>> If you're an aspiring writer, the same is true as written above for freelancers and intra-job journos. If you don't mind writing for free, we will be glad to post your stuff and help you find you first job as a technology journalist. During your time with us, you can add to your c.v. the title "Contributing Writer, TechnologyInnovator.com," and have plenty of clips and a bona fide reference to help get things going. As well, each posting may include a biographical summary and a link to your blog, portfolio and/or c.v.
For Analysts,Consultants and Tech Bloggers
>> If you are an analyst, consultant or tech blogger, and want to share your wisdom with our readers, we will be glad to post your columns, including a biographical summary and link to your company website and/or blog. For small boutique firms hoping to generate leads and find new clients, as well as larger analyst shops wanting to have an additional channel for your insights (and to market your reports), consider TechnologyInnovator.com as a platform for your insights and ideas on technology innovation. For bloggers, we like lengthy, thoughtful original columns - but not short introductions that point to aggregated content from elsewhere. As a general rule of thumb, we desire a minimum of three paragraphs or 300 words, though will consider an exception for a short but exceptionally thoughtful column.
For Vendors and PR Firms
>> For vendors and PR firms representing technology vendors, we welcome your bylined articles, guest commentaries, and shorter white papers discussing technology challenges and your solutions. We have four writing opportunities for members of the vendor and PR community:
Do It Yourself Opportunities:
>> By-Liner Posting: If you're a vendor or agency working with a technology vendor, we'll gladly post your byliner for free in the appropriate section of our site, complete with a biography of the author and link to your corporate site or blog.
>> Op/Ed Posting: For those of you with a strong viewpoint or opinion to share, we'll gladly post your opinion or commentary - no worries about objectivity, people will figure out from who you are and where you work that your perspective is wonderfully, blissfully one-sided - that's what opinions are supposed to be! We're opinionated, too, and we love to hear others' opinions. So feel free to pontificate and opinionate to your heart's delight!
While we do post your bylined and op/ed submissions for free, we do charge a one-time, flat fee of $500 for reprint rights if you want to distribute hardcopy reprints of your article and our logo at a tradeshow or industry event. We do not charge a markup for printing and are just as happy to work with your printer as with our printer!
We Do It For You!
>> By-Liner Writing: Some companies are so big they have in-house editorial and marcom support to generate reams of collateral to post in trade journals and webzines. But smaller companies seldom have this capacity - but that doesn't mean they don't have a compelling story to tell. For smaller companies, the choices are fewer - you can hire a PR firm, recruit a freelance writer on Craigslist, or hire us! That's right, for just $1,000 we will participate in one (1) 60-minute phone briefing with your company's executives (or several shorter briefings totaling 60 minutes), and prepare a Q&A-styled byliner profiling your company, which we will post on our site. The completed article will be around 1,000 words, and you may repost or reprint this article in an unlimited fashion for no extra fee (we waive our normal $500 reprint fee when we're hired to write the article.)
>> Mega By-Liner Writing: For $2,500, we will participate in three hours of briefings with your execs (maybe one one half-day session or several shorter briefings), and prepare a more in-depth profile of your company, which we will post on our site. The completed article will be around 2,500 words and you may repost or reprint this article in an unlimited fashion for no extra fee (we waive our normal $500 reprint fee when we're hired to write the article.)
For the above opportunities, if you are in cash-preservation mode or otherwise unable to afford our fees, we will consider a barter arrangement. We'll also work for stock in your company! We would be happy to work with you to leverage your exposure on our site: please see the section below on lead-generation partnership opportunities.
Submission Guidelines
>> All articles and columns should be text-only: no graphics, photos, figures, tables, or charts please! We love text. Indeed, we're 100%, unreformed text addicts!
>> For bylined submissions from vendors or PR firms, some additional guidelines to keep in mind: always include a proposed title/headline as well as the author's name and a brief, one or two sentence bio. Please share your enthusiasm, since this is your chance to convince potential customers or partners that you are the next big thing! Try to avoid industry jargon that means little to people outside your space. Please resist the temptation to refer to your company as a "global leader" or a "leading vendor" in your space - as true as that may be, that's really for others to decide! As well, please don't mention something as happening "today" (or even "tomorrow") like so many press releases do, since the article may well be read weeks, months or even years from now, so please mention specific dates, and in a manner that won't require revision later on as the present becomes the past! (While your article will remain on our site for perpetuity, over time you can expect fewer and fewer hits as its spot in our archives drops lower and lower, -though the magic of Google, Wikipedia and other magical mystery search machines might unearth your bylined article months, or even years, later.)
>> No press releases, please!
Lead Generation Partnerships
>> On a regular basis, our readers - representing US government agencies, corporations and academic institutions - contact us seeking to establish contact with a vendor who is profiled on our site. We will gladly pass along all leads that come our way to vendors who enter into a lead-generation partnership with us, and who agree to remit to us a 2% finder's fee based on the total value of any sales resulting from our leads.
Reprints
>> If you'd like to reprint an article from our site for use at a tradeshow or industry event, we charge a one-time, flat fee of $500 plus printing/shipping/tax charges. We're happy to work with your printer, or ours - we don't charge a mark-up on the printing, nor a per-copy fee like other publications or reprint services.
